The game started on a high note for the home crowd, as running back Myles Montgomery exploded for two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. His performance, which included a 29-yard scoring sprint, gave the Knights a commanding 14-0 lead.

The momentum began to turn in the second quarter as Kansas responded with 14 points. UCF managed to stem the tide just before the halftime whistle when kicker Noe Ruelas drilled a 38-yard field goal. The score allowed the Knights to preserve a slim 20-14 advantage as both teams headed into the locker rooms.

The second half belonged entirely to the Jayhawks' defense, which stopped UCF on three consecutive plays from the 1-yard line late in the game. Kansas capitalized on a critical strip-sack, setting up Leshon Williams for his third short touchdown run of the night. Despite late drives into striking distance, the Knights were completely shut out after halftime, falling just short of a comeback.
