Dillion Gabriel and the UCF Knights treated those who waited through the weather delay to a 36-31 victory over the visiting Boise State Broncos. Boise came out strong and scored two touchdowns in the 1st Quarter of the game. The first touchdown of the game was an interception by Tyrie LeBeauf which he returned 100yds mostly uncontested. After having just come off a nearly three hour weather delay, this wasn't the game anyone was hoping to watch. It would be nice to say it got better from there, in the 1st half, but this would be just one touchdown in what ultimately developed into a 21 point lead for the Broncos.
Right before halftime DG gave the visitors a little message that it wasn't going to be so easy and threw a touchdown. After the game, new head coach Gus Malzahn elaborated on what took place in the locker room during halftime by saying "We went into halftime with a lot of confidence, and we just talked. 'Hey let's go down the first drive in third quarter -- if we score we win the game," Having gone into the locker room down by 10, the Knights put Malzahn's plan into action with Gabriel tossing Brandon Johnson an 11yd pass to close the gap to bring the knights within three points. This touchdown was exactly what Gus prescribed to cure the Knights deficit. Not long after that touchdown, dillion would throw to Jaylon Robinson who then found his way into the end zone for UCF to take the lead.
The Bronco's would take the lead back one more time by intercepting yet another ball and converting that opportunity in the 4th to a score of 31-30, in the visitors favor. The final points would be put on the board by UCF's Isaiah Bowser who drove through the defense in an eight yard drive which took him into the end zone ending the game 36-31 in the favor of the Knights. In his post game remarks, Malzahn summed it up quite succinctly by saying “I think it’s just the potential,” he said. “I believed it before I got here. Now that I got here, I believe it ever more. Everything is aligned.” This confidence in the Knights is exactly what will drive them toward bigger games, more wins and some day get to prove what they've touted for the last several years, that the Knights are in fact a championship organization.
