The UCF Knights are officially gearing up for the 2026 football season as head coach Scott Frost enters the second year of his second stint leading the program. Following a 5-7 finish in 2025, the team returned to the gridiron on Monday, August 3, 2026, to kick off their preseason fall camp. The Knights are looking to bounce back during their 20th season playing home games at the Acrisure Bounce House in Orlando, Florida.
The primary catalyst for this season's offensive turnaround is newly signed starting quarterback Alonza Barnett III, a highly anticipated redshirt senior transfer from James Madison University. Barnett joins UCF with substantial postseason pedigree, having earned Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year honors while leading the Dukes to a spot in the College Football Playoff. He will command an offense that returns key targets like wide receiver Duane Thomas Jr. and tight end Dylan Wade, while also incorporating record-breaking true freshman wide receiver Tyren Hornes, an Under Armour All-American who stands as one of the highest-rated recruits of either of Frost's coaching tenures.
Defensively, second-year coordinator Alex Grinch aims to prioritize forced turnovers behind an experienced secondary. The defense is anchored by linebacker Lewis Carter, who earned Second Team Preseason All-Big 12 honors from Phil Steele, alongside returning leaders Jayden Bellamy and Antione Jackson. This defense will be tested across a 12-game schedule that kicks off on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at home against Bethune-Cookman. The Knights will play seven home games this season, including critical Big 12 Conference home matchups at the Acrisure Bounce House against TCU, BYU, Baylor, Arizona State, and Iowa State.
